Child’s Play | How My Childhood was Censored

C

Having experience in the music industry at such a young age has altered my perception of censorship. I’ve lost count how many times listeners told me what I was writing about was horrible; I should stop performing or I deserve to die. I never wrote anything trashy; I was never sexist or racist in my songs; but when people feel the need to control, they will try to stop anything – even if it’s me at age ten singing about how awesome I am.

Now as a writer, I take censorship as a compliment. Knowing that I wrote something that rubbed someone the wrong way encourages me to push the envelope and strengthen my craft. But as a young student, who was being told day in and day out to be honest and act appropriate, having a teacher blatantly lie to me or not take responsibility for mishearing something, was disappointing.

I’m sure to this day, Mr. Harding and the kindergarten teacher are embarrassed by their actions and feel guilty for not telling the truth. Still to this day, I can feel confident knowing that although I was censored, I was the most honest person in the room.
